The Type 181 was a convertible and had an AM radio. This vehicle weighed in at 1,920 pounds. It was able to hold up to four people comfortably. There was a manual 4 speed transmission which accelerated from 0-60mph in 23.2 seconds. However there was a known error in the speedometer, it was slightly off by a few mph. For example, if the speedometer read 50 mph, the vehicle was actually only going 46 mph.

On a full tank of gas, it would go approximately 210 miles, nearly 21 mpg; it had an overhead valve where the camshaft was held in the engine block. This two-wheel drive vehicle has 185 SRx14 size tires and 5 JKx14 size rims.

The Volkswagen Type 181 was manufactured from 1968-1983 in several countries. It was made in Wolfsburg, Germany from 1968-1974, in Hannover, Germany from 1974-1983, in Puebla, Mexico from 1970-1980 and Jakarta, Indonesia from 1973-1980. There were over 90,000 produced.

The German version adopted the term the Kurierwagen. In Mexico it was called the Safari. It was known as "The Thing" in the United States. The Type 181 was sold in many countries; Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and Mexico. It sold for between $2700.00 and $2900.00.

The Type 181 was similar in mechanics to the Volkswagen Beetle, however. It was classified as an off road military vehicle. This vehicle was originally built for the German Army. It was later sold to the public. After 1980, the vehicle was no longer available to the public. Since 1983 there has been no more Volkswagen Type 181's produced.

Today many off road enthusiasts purchase used VW Thing's and modify them for offroad or baja type configurations. The Type 181's higher ride height and lower effective gearing are a few of the features that make it sought after by off roaders.

VW Thing Maintenance

It was recommended that the oil be changed every 3,000 miles. The filter should be changed every 6,000 miles. A tune up was required every 12,000 miles. This was to keep the vehicle at optimal performance.
